"You don’t need to explain." Ruan Yesheng tilted her head slightly, looking at Xi Mo, who was close at hand. She smiled and reached out to unbutton her clothes. "I understand everything."

Her eyes looked like they were soaked in water. Up close, the light inside seemed to ripple out with the waves, easily hooking a person's soul.

Xi Mo quickly moved her body back and said, "…What are you doing?"

Ruan Yesheng had already undone the third button. Facing Xi Mo’s question, she looked extremely calm. "Of course, I’m changing clothes and then getting in bed. What else?"

Before, after taking a shower, she and Xi Mo would just wear pajamas and lie down directly. But later, knowing the police would come to check the rooms, they changed into different clothes. Now, they had to change back again.

Xi Mo felt like she could not respond to that. She instinctively stood up, walked to the other side of the bed, and sat with her back facing Ruan Yesheng, as if she did not want to see her changing clothes.

Ruan Yesheng quietly turned her head to glance at her and saw that she was still sitting there like an unromantic wooden post. She felt both annoyed and amused. She said, "You better hurry up. I’m changing with my back to you now, but once I’m done, that might not be the case."

When Xi Mo heard that, she immediately stood up straight again and quickly took off her clothes. She changed into her pajamas at the fastest speed in her life.

Ruan Yesheng really did not turn back to look, but judging from the rustling sounds coming from the other side of the bed, it was easy to imagine just how fast Xi Mo was moving.

She struggled to hold back her laughter but did not say anything. When she heard the soft sound of the blanket being lifted, she finally turned around.

Xi Mo was already lying down, perfectly straight, with her hands folded over her stomach, and her eyes were fixed on the ceiling.

And she was almost lying at the very edge of her side of the bed.

It was clearly her own bed, yet at this moment, she lay on it with an extremely restrained posture. The space she occupied was so cramped that if she moved just an inch further, she would fall off the bed.

Ruan Yesheng lifted the blanket.

The cool air seeped into the blanket from the outside. Xi Mo felt it and became even more motionless.

Ruan Yesheng looked at her with a grin. “You’re really polite, leaving such a big space for me to sleep. It’s so big I could even roll around.”

Xi Mo: “...”

Roll around? You wish!

Xi Mo didn’t look at her. Her gaze stayed fixed on the ceiling as she said, “You can’t go past the middle of the bed.”

“Then why aren’t you sleeping in all that empty space on your side?” Ruan Yesheng obviously knew the answer but still asked, “Look, you’re about to fall off.”

Xi Mo sneered and said, "Leave this empty spot so I can roll around at night."

Ruan Yesheng: "..."

Xi Mo finally turned her face to the side and looked at her with an unreadable expression. “So you can roll around, but I can’t?”

Of course, doing something as undignified as rolling around was absolutely impossible for Xi Mo. To her, it was practically a disgrace. But just to get back at Ruan Yesheng, she was actually willing to bring up something she would never normally mention.

“Of course you can.” Ruan Yesheng had no choice but to go along with it. “You can roll however you want.”

As she spoke, she slipped under the blanket and pulled it up a little, leaving only half of her face exposed.

The edge of the blanket hid the smile at the corner of her lips.

Because she sensed Ruan Yesheng getting in, Xi Mo’s body tensed up even more.

Ruan Yesheng, however, was very obedient. Since Xi Mo told her not to cross the middle, she didn’t cross it and stayed on her own side of the bed.

Xi Mo glanced at her from the corner of her eye, as if secretly observing her.

Ruan Yesheng noticed and understood, saying, “I didn’t cross it. If you’re not at ease, do you want to build a barrier with pillows in the middle?”

“No need.” Xi Mo seemed unhappy, and her tone turned even colder. “Am I that kind of person?”

Ruan Yesheng turned to her side, resting her head on her arm in an extremely relaxed posture. She stared at Xi Mo without blinking and said, “Sorry, I was wrong. I just remembered that if it were before, you would have used a pillow to separate us.”

“If it were before.” Xi Mo’s voice seemed a little softer, carrying a hint of a sigh. “I wouldn’t have been willing to sleep with you, so where would the pillow come from?”

Ruan Yesheng was stunned for a moment, then a nearly uncontrollable joy surged in her eyes. “You mean, now you’re willing to sleep with me?”

Xi Mo: “…”

A slight blush rose on Ruan Yesheng’s cheeks. She knew her words were easy to misunderstand, but she didn’t bother to explain further.

“Go to sleep. Good night.” Xi Mo didn’t say anything more. She propped herself up, turned off the bedside lamp, and lay back down.

“Good night.” Wrapped in the warm blanket, Ruan Yesheng felt an unprecedented warmth.

Before, she never had the chance to hear Xi Mo say good night to her. But now, she had already lost count of how many times Xi Mo had said it.

The chill of an autumn night was always gentle.

Ruan Yesheng’s heart felt unbelievably soft. She felt as if she had gotten a little closer to Xi Mo—there was a subtle sense of satisfaction, yet at the same time, she paradoxically longed for an even closer distance.

That longing made it hard for her to fall asleep. So for a long time, Ruan Yesheng simply lay there with her eyes closed, her thoughts rising and falling, unable to stop. If thoughts had a stickiness to them, then by now, hers would have been stuck to Xi Mo, clinging so tightly that they couldn’t be peeled away.

“Are you asleep?” After a long silence, it was Xi Mo who spoke first.

“No.” Ruan Yesheng immediately responded. “What is it?”

“…Nothing.” In the darkness, Xi Mo’s voice carried an indescribable tone.

Ruan Yesheng found it difficult to pinpoint the exact word to describe Xi Mo’s voice at this moment. She had never imagined that Xi Mo would speak to her in such a tone.

It was soft, carrying a hint of guilt, yet mixed with some other indescribable emotion.

Ruan Yesheng’s heartbeat grew erratic.

She actually wanted to move a little closer to Xi Mo, but remembering the boundary Xi Mo had set on the bed, she didn’t dare make any further moves.

Just as she was unsure how to respond, Xi Mo spoke again.

“Thank you.”

Ruan Yesheng froze for a moment before quickly asking, “Why are you suddenly saying thank you?”

“The thing behind the door.” Xi Mo’s voice was low. “Thank you for not asking me about it.”

“If you don’t want to talk about it, then it must be your secret.” Ruan Yesheng understood and chuckled softly. “I told you, I don’t want to know your secrets. I only want to know the secrets that belong to the two of us.”

After a moment of silence, Xi Mo said, “I saw Ding Qihong through the peephole. She was looking inside, and it reminded me of some things I desperately want to forget but just cannot. I was actually afraid you would ask me about it, but you did not. Thank you.”

“If you want to forget but cannot, then it must be something bad.” Ruan Yesheng comforted her softly. “Do not think about it now.”

Saying she was not curious would be a lie. But Ruan Yesheng knew that Xi Mo seemed to have some deep psychological trauma. She had seen a glimpse of it before—when she visited Xi Mo during her illness and found her clutching the bedside lamp while hiding at the edge of the bed. Xi Mo’s extreme caution probably had something to do with those past shadows.

A shadow was a wound one did not want to touch. Ruan Yesheng’s heart ached for Xi Mo, and she could not bear to expose those scars.

The rustling sound of movement came from under the blanket. To her surprise, Xi Mo had shifted closer to her.

Though she had not yet crossed the middle boundary, she was no longer precariously sleeping on the very edge of the bed.

“You moved.” Ruan Yesheng chuckled. “Are you rolling around?”

Xi Mo: “…”

Being laughed at, she immediately scooted back to the edge, hanging there again as if holding in frustration.

Ruan Yesheng saw that she’d moved back again and immediately panicked. She scooted over, reaching out to wrap her arm around Xi Mo’s, trying to pull her back while speaking softly, “I’m sorry, I was wrong. I was just teasing you. You already came over, why are you going back?”

It hadn’t been easy for Xi Mo to move closer. Ruan Yesheng couldn’t afford to waste this rare opportunity.

“You crossed the boundary,” Xi Mo suddenly said.

The room was too dark for Ruan Yesheng to see Xi Mo’s expression, but for some reason, she could hear a hint of amusement in her voice.

Maybe it was this guess that made her bolder. She actually took it a step further, curling her leg over and tangling it with Xi Mo’s, clinging onto her completely. With a mix of teasing and allure, she said, “If you come over like you did just now, I’ll go back to the boundary. But if you don’t, I’m sleeping like this tonight.”

Xi Mo’s body instantly stiffened even more, yet she let Ruan Yesheng cling to her without pushing her away.

Ruan Yesheng realized that she had stayed silent for a long time without reacting at all, and her heartbeat became completely uncontrollable. If before, there had still been some shameless teasing in her tone, now her entire being felt like it was melting. A wave of heat rushed to her cheeks and wrapped around her whole body.

Because she was clinging to Xi Mo, Ruan Yesheng's chest was too close to her. She could clearly feel her heart pressing against Xi Mo, its heartbeat seeming to clamor powerfully, one beat after another.

And Xi Mo's silence at this moment made Ruan Yesheng even more nervous, yet also gave her an expectation she should not have.

"Xi Mo?" Ruan Yesheng called softly.

There was even a hint of barely controlled panting in her voice.

"I’ll come over." After a long pause, Xi Mo's reply was close to her ear. "Go back there first."

Ruan Yesheng took a deep breath and slowly retreated.

Xi Mo followed, moving toward her.

In the end, the two lay properly on either side of the boundary in the middle.

They were too close as if with just the slightest movement, this fragile boundary could be easily crossed.
