"Really too much." Xi Mo glanced lightly at Ruan Yesheng.

Her look still carried Xi Mo's usual pride, but when Ruan Yesheng looked at her, she just found her cute.

Like she wanted to ask for a gift, but she wouldn't say it straight, choosing instead to hint around. But the hint was too roundabout. If someone didn't know her temper well, they wouldn't be able to tell. And if she didn't get the gift, she would sulk in secret.

"What kind of gift do you want the 'production crew' to give you?" Ruan Yesheng asked with a smile, testing her tone.

She thought Xi Mo wouldn't tell her what she really wanted, but she wanted to try asking, maybe she could get some clue.

Sure enough, Xi Mo said, "What gift they give depends on the crew’s sincerity. I don't have anything I especially want. But if they give nothing, even after I helped the crew get on the hot search for 'knitting a sweater', they still show no sign at all."

Ruan Yesheng listened. The three words 'knitting a sweater' were spoken very clearly, and her eyes turned quickly.

"Then should I talk to the production crew for you?" Ruan Yesheng said, already guessing a bit in her heart.

Xi Mo frowned right away. "Don't. What's there to talk about? Do I have to ask for it before they give it? That would make me lose face."

Ruan Yesheng couldn’t hold it in this time and almost laughed. She coaxed her, "Okay, okay, I won’t say it. We’ll wait for the 'production crew' to give it to you on their own. I get it, your face is very expensive too."

Xi Mo: "..."

Time quietly slipped by under the shadows of the trees. The shorter it felt, the more Ruan Yesheng cherished this chance to talk with Xi Mo. But time kept reminding her she had to leave.

Seeing Ruan Yesheng glance at her watch, Xi Mo said, "Go on, get to filming."

"Okay." Ruan Yesheng nodded reluctantly. She looked at her for a long while before turning to leave.

But after just a few steps, Xi Mo called out, "Yesheng."

Ruan Yesheng turned back. The faint light in the distance and the mottled tree shadows fell over her.

"If I appear later at the sacrificial ceremony, that means I agreed to the production crew’s filming. You don’t need to worry about them doing it without my permission," Xi Mo reminded her.

"So, you’ll come?" Ruan Yesheng asked softly.

The hope in her eyes could no longer be hidden.

Xi Mo seemed unable to lie under that gaze. She nodded. "I’ll come. But maybe a bit late. I can’t have too many camera shots, so I’ll just film a short part as a passerby."

Ruan Yesheng finally got her answer. She smiled brightly. "Great, I’ll wait for you."

She kindly gave a suggestion. "Then come when we dance around the bonfire. That’s near the end, it won’t take long, and it’s fun."

"Okay." Xi Mo said as she looked at her.

Ruan Yesheng felt both satisfied and unwilling to part, but since tonight’s filming tasks were heavy, she had to leave quickly.

When Ruan Yesheng’s back disappeared from sight, Xi Mo finally left the tree.

Both teams had already found their ritual offerings and placed them on the altar. This was the town’s real grand event, and with the variety show filming added in, countless townsfolk gathered around. Many stalls were set up, selling food, drinks, and games of all kinds. Laughter and chatter filled the air, and the lively warmth seemed to dance with the flames of the bonfire on the cold winter night.

Ruan Yesheng and the others weren’t filming nonstop. There were still short breaks in between. The show’s broadcast time was limited, and even though they had been filming almost a full day and night, many scenes would still be cut out later.

"Ruanruan, I’m so tired," Shen Qingbie said, wrapped up in her down jacket and sitting on a folding chair for rest. "Right now, I just want to find a soft bed and lie down."

"Hang on a bit longer. Once we finish the bonfire dance, today’s tasks are basically done." Ruan Yesheng handed her a cup of hot water, took one for herself, and drank slowly. Steam rose up in the air.

Shen Qingbie looked around, feeling low in spirits. "A’Yu didn’t come to see me tonight. She was at the site all day. Wherever I was, she was there too."

"Maybe she’s tired too," Ruan Yesheng said. "I think her face looked a bit pale today."

"She said her appetite hasn’t been good these past two days, and she hasn’t been eating with me." Shen Qingbie glanced around casually. Many small lanterns were hanging on the nearby trees, each about the size of a palm, looking like tiny red persimmons, very cute. She asked, "Did you write a wish and hide it inside the lantern?"

"I did." Ruan Yesheng smiled and pointed toward a tree in the distance. "I hung it there."

"I haven’t written mine yet. Then I’ll hang mine on the same tree as yours." Shen Qingbie finally showed a happy look. "We’re good sisters."

Before, she had to pretend not to be close to Ruan Yesheng. Now that the two of them were finally filming a variety show together, they had this chance to naturally show their friendship in front of others without hiding anymore.

While they were talking, Gu Cen walked over with Li Siran, her arm over Li Siran’s shoulder, talking excitedly. "Believe it or not, I saw it with my own eyes! I’ve never seen someone so beautiful before! I’m telling you, she was really stunning!"

Li Siran didn’t feel like responding. She answered flatly, "Don’t talk so exaggerated. You’ve seen enough big scenes already. Stop acting like you’ve never seen a good-looking person."

Li Siran wasn’t wrong.

Where can you find the most beautiful people? Of course, in the entertainment circle.

Although many talented ones don’t care much about looks, most people who make a living in this industry still have high standards for appearance. With perfect makeup and hair for filming, and shining bright on the red carpet, handsome men and pretty women are everywhere, dazzling to the eyes. Some actors don’t even have acting skills but win people over with their looks. Even as vases, they still attract fans who like them for their faces.

Li Siran had seen plenty of beautiful stars, each with their own charm. So when she saw Gu Cen so shocked by someone’s looks, she couldn’t quite believe it.

Seeing Li Siran’s lack of reaction, Gu Cen lost interest and shifted her gossip target toward Ruan Yesheng and Shen Qingbie.

Filming a variety show made it easy to form emotional bonds. She wasn’t as cautious as when she first came and had loosened up a lot. She came over, greeted Ruan Yesheng and Shen Qingbie, and pulled a chair to sit with them.

"Sister Ruanruan, Sister Qingqing, I just came from over there and saw a super gorgeous woman! Her voice is also super nice!"

Gu Cen was younger and more easily drawn to appearances. Just like during school days, when she saw someone good-looking, she couldn’t wait to share the excitement with the people around her.

"Cold, but still sounded soft," Gu Cen described the person’s voice. "At first, I thought some celebrity came to visit the set. I found it strange, since I’d never seen her before. Later I found out she’s just an ordinary person, probably here traveling."

"Super gorgeous?" Shen Qingbie’s eyes lit up after hearing Gu Cen’s description. She asked curiously, "Do you have a photo?"

Gu Cen shook her head, disappointed. "No. She left really fast. I was too busy staring and totally forgot to take one. Wang Yanhe’s manager was there too. Guess what he did?"

"What about Wang Yanhe’s manager?" Ruan Yesheng asked.

Gu Cen said, "He went up to talk to her, of course. Wang Yanhe’s company doesn’t have many stars who can draw big traffic. Wang Yanhe’s one of their top ones. They’ve been looking for new talents lately. When that manager saw such a beautiful and classy woman, of course he wouldn’t let her go. He asked if she wanted to sign and enter showbiz, tried to tempt her with all kinds of offers. But that beauty barely paid him any attention, turned him down, and left. If it weren’t for that manager, maybe she would’ve stayed a bit longer."

Her tone carried a hint of annoyance toward Wang Yanhe’s manager, since he ruined her chance to admire the beauty more.

Li Siran folded her arms, her eyes also showing some displeasure.

But hers was directed at Gu Cen.

Gu Cen sighed in awe and pointed between her brows. "That beautiful woman was really different from others. She had a small mark of cinnabar right here. These days, except for costume dramas or people who wear hanfu, almost no one uses cinnabar makeup anymore. But it suited her perfectly. Her whole aura felt so natural. If some company really signed her and gave her a role in a historical drama, it’d definitely blow up!"

Li Siran rolled her eyes inwardly and said, "You still need acting skills, okay? You think just being pretty makes a show a hit? What if she can’t act at all? What’s the point then?"

Gu Cen said, "With a face like that, who even needs acting skills? Just standing there would draw ratings. Even straight girls would lose control and want to go lesbian for her, okay?"

Li Siran: "…"

Ruan Yesheng: "…"

Li Siran looked sideways and said, "So you saw her and wanted to go lesbian too?"

Gu Cen grinned. "Someone like me can’t accept going lesbian, but if it’s her, I could. Beauty is justice."

Li Siran cursed Gu Cen as an idiot in her heart.

The group kept chatting about the beauty for a while. During that time, Shen Qingbie went and hung a small lantern on the same tree Ruan Yesheng had chosen. Later, when the production crew came to call them, they all stood up to continue filming.

The bonfire burned brighter and brighter, glowing red against the cold night. As time passed, the festival’s atmosphere reached its peak. Xi Mo walked through the lively crowd toward the bonfire in the center, where the production crew and guests were gathered.

Someone bumped into her arm and it hurt a little.

With so many people, bumping into each other was hard to avoid. Xi Mo instinctively pulled her arm in and turned to look. The person who hit her was walking fast, squeezing through the crowd and disappearing quickly. She only caught a glimpse of a baseball cap, but she couldn’t see the face, and didn’t even know the person’s gender.

Xi Mo frowned slightly and glanced down at her arm.

Nothing seemed wrong.

So she kept walking forward.

The Yi people were good at singing and dancing. At that moment, the dancers in Yi costumes inside the bonfire circle were already holding hands, singing and dancing around the blazing fire.

They were all NPCs from the town, and the guests were mixed among them. Ruan Yesheng held Shen Qingbie’s hand with one hand and an NPC’s hand with the other, dancing along with them.

The firelight shone on Ruan Yesheng’s face. Her bright smile was even warmer than the fire, lighting up the night.

Xi Mo watched her carefully from a few people away.

Ruan Yesheng had sharp eyes and saw Xi Mo. She knew if Xi Mo was here, it meant she had agreed to the production crew’s filming. She quickly let go of her hands, pulled Xi Mo out of the crowd, and smiled, “Xi Mo, come dance with us.”

Xi Mo: “…”

She looked shy. “...I don’t know how. Don’t make trouble.”

“It’s easy.” Ruan Yesheng pulled her toward Shen Qingbie.

Xi Mo was led by her and could only follow her steps.

When Shen Qingbie saw Xi Mo, she was both surprised and happy, unable to hide her excitement. “Xi Mo, come on, quick, let’s hold hands.”

As she spoke, she reached out to grab Xi Mo’s hand.

Xi Mo’s left hand was held by Ruan Yesheng, and her right hand was held by Shen Qingbie. She was forced to join the circle of dancers around the bonfire. The circle kept moving and couldn’t stop, so Xi Mo had to move stiffly along with them. But she didn’t really dance, she just walked.

“Don’t just walk,” Ruan Yesheng laughed and urged her, “dance with us, it’s easy. Just move your legs up and down.”

Xi Mo’s legs still didn’t move.

So Ruan Yesheng let go of her hand for a moment, quickly bent down, and used her hand to lift Xi Mo’s thigh a little.

Xi Mo: “…”

Her whole body jolted, and her leg jumped on its own, dodging Ruan Yesheng’s hand like she’d been burned.

“See? That’s it.” Ruan Yesheng took her hand again. “Just jump like that.”

Xi Mo had no choice. Afraid Ruan Yesheng might touch her thigh again, she followed along and started to jump. Sometimes high, sometimes low. She didn’t look careless, but rather extremely restrained.

Ruan Yesheng secretly laughed. She felt Xi Mo’s palm was sweating and a little slippery.

She held Xi Mo’s hand tighter.

As if afraid Xi Mo might slip away from her grasp.

After the bonfire dance, the production crew was about to wrap up. But many people still stayed for the sacrificial ceremony. Ning Kui led the crew to greet the guests, thanking them for their hard work, and especially thanked Xi Mo.

The variety show gained a huge boost today thanks to the “Xi Mo knitting sweater” hot search. Ning Kui couldn’t stop smiling and even gave Xi Mo a bouquet of flowers.

While the staff were busy finishing up, Ruan Yesheng walked aside with Xi Mo. She looked at the flowers in Xi Mo’s arms and said on purpose, “The crew gave you a gift on their own. Look, a bouquet.”

Xi Mo: “…”

“You finally got a gift,” Ruan Yesheng said, watching her face carefully. “Are you happy now?”

“What kind of gift is this?” Xi Mo’s expression turned cold. “They always give flowers when filming ends. It’s just a polite gesture.”

Fans often sent her flowers too. Xi Mo had received so many that she felt numb to it.

“You don’t like getting flowers?” Ruan Yesheng asked.

“I don’t feel anything,” Xi Mo said honestly. “I’ve received too many.”

Ruan Yesheng could understand how she felt. “Then since you don’t care about them, give the flowers to me?”

Xi Mo paused and looked at her.

There was something hidden and hard to read in Ruan Yesheng’s eyes, something that made Xi Mo unsure what to think.

After a while, Xi Mo handed her the flowers. “Here.”

Ruan Yesheng carefully took them, holding the bouquet gently. Her heart pounded fast, and a satisfied smile slowly appeared on her lips.

Xi Mo saw Ruan Yesheng holding her flowers, smiling like a young girl. Her lowered eyes even showed a faint trace of shyness, and Xi Mo went blank for a moment. She suddenly felt warm, her eyes wandering as she asked, “When are you going back to your room?”

“It’s late. We’re almost done. After filming one last bedtime clip, we can finish,” Ruan Yesheng said.

“Even if you film it, it might not get used. Recording a variety show is troublesome,” Xi Mo said unhappily. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t have to stay there.”

Then she could just go back to stay with her in A'cuo Rize’s house.

Ruan Yesheng understood her displeasure and smiled. “That’s how variety shows are. There’s a lot to edit. You’ve been tired all night. Go rest first. When it’s time, I’ll go by myself.”

Xi Mo frowned. “I said I’d come get you. There are many people tonight. It’s easy to get lost.”

Ruan Yesheng couldn’t argue with her. “Then you go first. Come pick me up around the same time as yesterday.”

Xi Mo looked down at her watch. “It’s only two hours left anyway. I’ll just wait for you, so I don’t have to go back and forth. I’ll go borrow Bao from Uncle A'cuo. He and Auntie Ranla are nearby.”

“Alright.” Ruan Yesheng nodded and parted with her.

After Xi Mo left, she called A'cuo Rize to ask where he was and went to find him.

Ruan Yesheng stood there holding the bouquet, lowered her head to sniff the flowers softly, and smiled with her eyes lowered.

She secretly stole a candy for herself.

But Xi Mo didn’t know.

Ruan Yesheng returned to the crew’s resting area, ready to go back to the house with Shen Qingbie. But Shen Qingbie wasn’t there. She tried calling, but no one answered. Still, since Shen Qingbie had said they’d leave together, she figured she wouldn’t go back first, so she sat down to wait.

Shen Qingbie actually heard her phone ring, but she couldn’t answer it.

Because right now, she was climbing a tree and didn’t have a free hand.

That tree was covered with small lanterns. Many of them had the townspeople’s wishes or blessings inside. Shen Qingbie and Ruan Yesheng had also written one each before and hung them up. But when Shen Qingbie remembered that Yu An didn’t come, she realized Yu An didn’t have a lantern, so she decided to write one for her and hang it too.

When she went over, she heard two locals say that the higher you hang it, the closer it is to the gods, and the easier your wish will come true. The Yi people were devout and believed in gods. Shen Qingbie didn’t believe in that, but since she heard it, she wanted to hang Yu An’s lantern a bit higher.

Sadly, the lanterns all looked almost the same and were packed together. Shen Qingbie had no idea which one was hers and Ruan Yesheng’s from before, so she couldn’t take it back. She could only hang Yu An’s higher.

For that, she walked quite a distance and found a tree that looked the tallest. She worked hard to climb it and finally reached a higher branch, where she hung the small lantern she made for Yu An.

Now the wish would surely come true.

Shen Qingbie smiled and gently touched Yu An’s lantern. When A’Yu finds out, she would definitely praise her.

After hanging it, Shen Qingbie was about to go down, but when she stood on the branch and looked below, she froze. She had only focused on climbing up for Yu An, not looking down at all, and now, one glance down scared her.

How did she climb so high?

For her, climbing up was easy, climbing down was hard. She got nervous. Then she remembered her phone had rung earlier, so she took it out. Seeing Ruan Yesheng’s missed call, she quickly called back. “Ruanruan.”

“Where are you?” Ruan Yesheng asked. “I’m waiting for you in the rest area. We need to go back to the house.”

Shen Qingbie made a crying face. “Ruanruan, I’m... on a tree.”

Ruan Yesheng: “…”

“I can’t get down.” Shen Qingbie looked around from the tree, regretting so much it hurt. “I went to a pretty remote spot. There’s no one here.”

“Then where exactly are you?” Ruan Yesheng asked anxiously. “I’ll get someone to come over.”

“I’m not really sure either.” Shen Qingbie said, “It’s just the tallest tree nearby, covered with small lanterns.”

Ruan Yesheng quickly went to find staff for help.

Shen Qingbie sat on the branch waiting. She got bored and scared. She tried calling Yu An but Yu An didn’t pick up, and she didn’t reply to messages either. Shen Qingbie was almost in despair.

Where’s Ruanruan?

Shen Qingbie sat on the tree while muttering to herself. She was so bored she even thought of climbing down by herself several times but was scared she might get nervous and break her leg.

Luckily this place was remote and had no entertainment reporters. Otherwise, tomorrow’s hot search would be about “Shen Qingbie breaks leg climbing tree.”

That would be a heavy price for a hot search.

She didn’t know how long had passed. She kept mumbling and then looked down. A tall and graceful figure was walking toward the tree.

That person’s long hair swayed lightly with each step, and while moving there seemed to be no sound at all, her body wrapped in the cool night air.

Shen Qingbie suddenly got all excited. She thought Ruanruan might not find this spot anytime soon. It’d be better to ask the person under the tree to help, maybe bring her over, or get a ladder or something.

She quickly turned on her phone’s flashlight, shone it down, and waved hard as she said, “Hello, can you help me?”

Afraid the person wouldn’t help for free, she added, “I’ll pay you.”

The person stood still under her flashlight, slowly lifting her head to look up.

When Shen Qingbie saw her, her breath almost stopped.

The woman under the tree instantly caught her eyes. Such beauty, just one glance and it’d stay in one’s memory. Her brows and eyes were cold and distant, her nose was delicate and high, her whole being looked like jade carved from snow, something otherworldly.

What stood out most was her air. It was unlike anyone Shen Qingbie had ever seen. Like soft ink in water, she seemed far from the hustle and bustle of modern life, calm and alone in her own quiet world.

There was a dot of bright red cinnabar between her brows, adding a lively touch to the quiet, ancient ink-painting beauty she had.

Looking at her, Shen Qingbie suddenly remembered the great beauty Gu Cen once mentioned. She felt it matched perfectly.

Shen Qingbie sighed inside. Gu Cen really wasn’t making things up. With this face, even straight women would want to go lesbian for her.

The woman said nothing. She just stood under the tree, looking up at her faintly.

Shen Qingbie quickly explained, “I… I can’t get down. Can you go call someone to help me? I won’t let you go for nothing. I’ll thank you.”

The woman didn’t move.

After a moment, she said, “Jump down.”

Shen Qingbie: “…”

Her voice was cool and clear, yet it carried a kind of comforting gentleness. “Jump down. I’ll catch you.”

“This…” Shen Qingbie didn’t dare.

No one would dare.

If she jumped down, her legs would be gone. If she landed on the beauty, she might even crush her too.

Seeing Shen Qingbie didn’t dare to come down, the woman lightly tapped her toes and went up the tree.

In the blink of an eye, Shen Qingbie saw she was already up. Shen Qingbie was stunned. The phone light in her hand was too weak to see how the woman got up.

The woman’s steps were light. She walked on the branches like flat ground and soon reached where Shen Qingbie was sitting.

“Pardon me.” The woman bent down and held Shen Qingbie up.

“How did you even get up here?” Shen Qingbie was dumbfounded.

The woman didn’t explain. She only said, “I will take you down.”

Shen Qingbie: “…”

She quickly waved her hands. “No no no, this won’t do. It’s too high. My legs could break.”

The woman spoke with an old-style tone. “Fear not. I will take you. They will not break.”

She seemed afraid of scaring Shen Qingbie. Without Shen Qingbie’s permission, she didn’t force her down. Instead, she gave her a demonstration, leaping lightly from the tree by herself.

She landed like a white crane, then looked up at Shen Qingbie.

Shen Qingbie: “…”

What’s going on?

How is that even possible?

The woman climbed back up the tree again, looking serious. “I am a stuntwoman. I trained in martial arts. You can trust me. I will hurt you.”

“Stuntwoman?” Shen Qingbie had seen her moves. Hearing this, she got excited. She had acted in dramas before and knew some stuntpeople were amazing. Forget climbing trees. They could even roll off car roofs during chase scenes.

“Alright, alright.” Shen Qingbie finally agreed. “You hold me down, like a princess carry in TV shows. You can do that, right?”

“I can.” The woman said. “But I will not.”

“How can that be?” Shen Qingbie still had her doubts. “I’m not like you. I haven’t trained in stunts. If you carry me down, I’m afraid I won’t know how to place my feet and might twist an ankle. I thought if you did the princess carry, my legs would be dangling and I would be safer.”

She was pretty practical.

The woman said, “I do not carry people that way.”

“Ah?” Shen Qingbie was a bit confused.

“I will carry you down. You will not get hurt,” the woman said softly.

Seeing her like this, and having already witnessed her stunt skills, Shen Qingbie didn’t hesitate and nodded. “Alright, thank you.”

With Shen Qingbie’s permission, the woman held her body and leapt down.

“Ahhhhhhh!” Wind rushed past Shen Qingbie’s ears and she screamed instinctively.

The next second, she landed on the ground.

Shen Qingbie felt her feet touch the earth, and there was no pain at all. She stomped a few times, feeling like she was dreaming.

Overjoyed, she looked at the woman, full of gratitude. “Thank you so much. I’m Shen Qingbie. What is your name?”

The woman didn’t tell her full name, just said, “My surname is Luo.”

“Miss Luo,” Shen Qingbie said warmly, acting friendly. “I’m an actor. Let’s exchange contacts. If there’s stunt work in the future, I can recommend you.”

“Apologies, I did not bring my phone,” Miss Luo didn’t agree to exchange contacts, seeming to politely decline.

Shen Qingbie said, “That’s okay. You can just tell me your phone number.”

Miss Luo said, “I forgot.”

Shen Qingbie: “…”

Though a bit silly in other ways, she wasn’t dumb here. She noticed Miss Luo was cautious; she didn’t seem like the type to give her contact easily. Shen Qingbie hurried to explain, “Are you uncomfortable? I’m not a bad person, I just want to recommend stunt work. I really am an actor.”

She realized Miss Luo didn’t know her, which made her a little disappointed. She thought she was famous enough, but not enough for Miss Luo to recognize her. To prove herself, she even opened her phone to show Miss Luo her profile.

Miss Luo glanced, saw Shen Qingbie very serious, hesitated a moment, finally gave her phone number.

Shen Qingbie quickly saved the number, said, "Don’t worry, I won’t bother you without reason. If there’s work, I will introduce you."

Miss Luo said nothing, lightly said, "Thank you. Goodbye."

Shen Qingbie waved goodbye to her.

Miss Luo turned around, walked into the night.

Shen Qingbie called Ruan Yesheng. Ruan Yesheng had been unable to find the tree Shen Qingbie mentioned, almost very anxious. Now they arranged a meeting point and met.

Ruan Yesheng saw her come back safe, finally relaxed, said, "You scared me, why on earth did you climb the tree, how did you come down?"

Shen Qingbie’s eyes lit up, extremely excitedly told Ruan Yesheng her experience: "The super beauty Gu Cen mentioned, I saw her, she brought me down, she is a stuntwoman!"

Ruan Yesheng: "…"

What nonsense is this?

Shen Qingbie vividly described her previous experience to Ruan Yesheng. Only then did Ruan Yesheng understand, it was Miss Luo who saved Shen Qingbie, and she is a stunt actress. Shen Qingbie plans to introduce work to Miss Luo.

Luckily Shen Qingbie was fine. Ruan Yesheng didn’t think much, and quickly told Shen Qingbie to go back with her.

Author's Note:
