Chapter 168: A Slight Smile

But Ruan Yesheng had heard the whole story from Shen Qingbie about how Miss Luo saved her from the tree, so she knew more than Xi Mo about Miss Luo’s skills now.
Seeing Xi Mo’s surprised face, Ruan Yesheng quickly explained, “Miss Luo is a stuntwoman. She must be good at this.”
Miss Luo narrowed her eyes slightly when she heard that. The identity of “stuntwoman” was what she told Shen Qingbie before. It seemed she already knew Ruan Yesheng and the person on the tree, Shen Qingbie, were acquainted, but she said nothing.
When Miss Luo looked at people, it was as if a faint, cold mist separated her gaze, not revealing anything.
Ruan Yesheng saw Xi Mo still confused, so she briefly retold Shen Qingbie’s story about climbing the tree to hang small lanterns. Then she turned to Miss Luo and said, “That’s about it. Qingqing said she was saved by a Miss Luo. You look a lot like the person she described. May I ask, was it you?”
“Yes,” Miss Luo replied.
Ruan Yesheng, who was good at socializing, smiled naturally even with strangers. “Thank you for helping Qingqing.”
“It was nothing,” Miss Luo said. Her voice was cool but polite, carrying a graceful and refined air.
“Miss Luo, may I ask you to help us listen to the sound inside the room?” Ruan Yesheng said sincerely, a bit worried. “Xi Mo and I have run into some trouble lately. Xi Mo saw you put a strand of hair at the door gap, so before she left, she did the same. But just now, we found the hair had fallen to the floor. We’re not sure if someone touched her door and entered the room.”
Although what Miss Luo said about being able to hear if someone was inside the room through the door sounded a bit unbelievable, when it came from her mouth, it strangely gave a sense of calm and trust.
Miss Luo seemed to have a special kind of charm that made people easily believe her words.
“Mm.” Miss Luo responded softly and walked to the door.
Ruan Yesheng then noticed her steps. They were so light that no sound came from her movement. No wonder she had appeared so quietly at the stairway earlier.
Miss Luo stopped at the door, leaned closer, and pressed her ear against it to listen.
The surroundings suddenly fell silent. Ruan Yesheng grew a little nervous and unconsciously stood straight, while Xi Mo stared closely at Miss Luo’s every move.
After a while, Miss Luo glanced at them and said calmly, “It sounds empty inside, and there is no movement.”
But then she added, “However, that is not enough to judge the situation inside.”
Ruan Yesheng nodded gratefully. She heard Miss Luo say that if someone knew how to hold their breath, it would be hard to notice from outside. Since Yan Tinghuan wasn’t here, Ruan Yesheng actually wanted to ask if Miss Luo could go in with them to take a look. After all, neither she nor Xi Mo could fight. If someone was really hiding inside, they would have a hard time dealing with it.
Ruan Yesheng knew her limits. She wouldn’t act tough. When something was beyond her ability, she preferred to find someone who might help.
But this sounded like a dangerous matter. Helping to listen outside was fine since it carried no direct risk, yet going in together was different. It felt wrong to ask such a thing from someone she had just met.
That would indeed trouble the other person too much.
Miss Luo silently watched Ruan Yesheng, as if studying her expression. Seeing that she wanted to speak but held back, she said, “If you wish, I can go in and take a look.”
Ruan Yesheng was a bit surprised and quickly replied, “Of course we would like that, but I’m worried it will trouble you.”
“It is no trouble,” Miss Luo said simply.
Ruan Yesheng squeezed Xi Mo’s hand and whispered, “Open the door.”
Xi Mo nodded, walked to the door again, and turned the key. As the key turned, her heart tightened. When the lock clicked open, she slowly twisted the handle and pushed the door open just a crack.
“I will go in first,” Miss Luo said softly, shining her phone light through the gap.
From her cool voice and calm actions, Ruan Yesheng strangely felt a trace of gentleness. Everyone knew that the one who went first faced the most danger, yet Miss Luo chose to take the lead.
They were only strangers, but Ruan Yesheng still felt touched by her care.
Xi Mo also looked at Miss Luo’s back and said, “Then, be careful.”
Miss Luo didn’t answer. She reached out, pushed the door open, and stepped inside. The beam of her phone’s flashlight swept slowly across the room, from one corner to another. She stood still and quiet, as if she had blended into the dimness around her.
Light and shadow flickered across the room, creating a strange and eerie atmosphere for a moment.
Ruan Yesheng and Xi Mo almost held their breath.
Miss Luo stopped looking around and walked to the switch. She pressed it, and the room instantly filled with bright light, sweeping away the cold and silent atmosphere from before.
“No one is hiding,” Miss Luo turned around and looked at them. “Even if someone came, they have already left. But I do not know if anything in the room was taken or added. You should check.”
Hearing that, Ruan Yesheng finally breathed a sigh of relief. She said to Xi Mo, “This is your room. You know it best. See if anything’s missing or suddenly appeared.”
Xi Mo started searching every part of the room. She checked the closet, drawers, and bed first, then carefully looked under the table, under the bed, between the furniture, and every hidden corner that was easy to miss. Ruan Yesheng followed beside her, helping with the search.
Miss Luo glanced around again, then went to inspect the door lock. Standing at the doorway, she seemed to take a light sniff before walking around the room once more.
Xi Mo was cautious and checked back and forth. After a long while, she finally said, “Nothing unusual.”
“Miss Luo, did you find anything?” Ruan Yesheng asked softly as she walked over.
“Nothing else,” Miss Luo said. “But there is a faint smell.”
Hearing that, Ruan Yesheng leaned by the door and took a careful sniff. There really was a trace of some faint scent, so light she wouldn’t have noticed if Miss Luo hadn’t mentioned it. Xi Mo also came over to smell it, her expression slightly changing. She even felt the scent seemed a bit familiar.

Miss Luo glanced at the door lock and calmly analyzed, “The lock shows signs of being tampered with. The smell is strongest here. The person carrying this scent must have directly touched the lock and stayed for a while. They were likely unlocking it.”
Xi Mo felt a chill run down her spine. “When I opened the door earlier, the lock was still latched. I had to use the key to turn it. If the person used a lock-picking tool, could they also make it look untouched afterward, even without a key?”
“It does not seem like traces from a lock-picking tool,” Miss Luo replied.
“Not a tool?” Xi Mo frowned. Usually, lock-picking tools left small scratch marks if one looked closely. That made her even more puzzled. “Then did the person use a key?”
But the key was clearly with her all along. It was never lost. Ranla Changxiu had also said that there was only one key to this room, so it shouldn’t have been copied.
“Not a key either,” Miss Luo said, her brow faintly furrowed. “I am not sure what it was. There is mucus.”
Xi Mo’s face darkened.
Mucus?
She walked to the door lock, leaned closer, and looked carefully. She sniffed it and found that, just as Miss Luo said, the smell was strongest there. At the keyhole, there was a faint trace of something sticky, like a bit of mucus rubbed on it, as if whatever unlocked the door had left the mark.
If something was used to unlock it, then it had to be thin enough to reach into the keyhole and move the mechanism inside. Otherwise, it wouldn’t fit.
Ruan Yesheng also took a look and said to Xi Mo, “Collect that mucus. Maybe Cui Jiayu can find a way to send it to forensics for testing.”
Xi Mo nodded, took a clean cotton swab, and gently scraped some of the mucus from the keyhole. Then she went downstairs, found a clear sealable bag, and put the swab inside.
Miss Luo stayed mostly silent. She didn’t speak unless necessary and just stood nearby, quietly watching them.
Other than the mucus on the lock, Xi Mo found nothing else unusual. Nothing was missing, and no suspicious items had appeared. Still, she couldn’t shake off a lingering fear.
After all, someone had entered the room. Even though the person was long gone, she still felt a chill deep in her heart.
“Do you want to go back to the program house to sleep? I can take you there,” Xi Mo whispered to Ruan Yesheng. “Something like this happened in the room. You might not sleep well here.”
“Then where will you sleep?” Ruan Yesheng frowned at her. “You’ll sleep here alone? Can you even fall asleep?”
“…I can sleep on the couch downstairs,” Xi Mo said. “Anyway, Baolai is outside. Earlier, Baolai went with us to the sacrificial ceremony, which gave them the chance to sneak in. If someone tries again, Baolai will notice.”
Ruan Yesheng had already decided she would sleep with Xi Mo tonight. After what happened, she couldn’t bear to let Xi Mo stay alone. She quickly shook her head. “I’m not going back.”
Because someone else was present, she didn’t dare make it sound too obvious.
“Then both of us can’t fit on the couch,” Xi Mo said, looking at the faint shimmer in Ruan Yesheng’s eyes, helpless against her.
“We can squeeze in,” Ruan Yesheng said, her hands unconsciously holding onto Xi Mo’s arm. She gave a reason Xi Mo could hardly refuse. “If we go back now, I really don’t want to move anymore. It’s so cold outside, and my eyelids are fighting. I just want to sleep.”
Xi Mo: “…”
Miss Luo had been watching them quietly for a while. Then she said, “We can change rooms.”
Ruan Yesheng and Xi Mo froze at the same time and looked at Miss Luo.
“Someone unlocked the door and entered your room. Naturally, they were after you,” Miss Luo said, glancing at Xi Mo. “If I stay here instead, it will be alright.”
This was Xi Mo’s own trouble, so she couldn’t possibly let Miss Luo take her place. Even though Miss Luo meant well, Xi Mo would feel guilty if she agreed. She quickly said, “It’s alright. You should sleep in your own room. Someone came in here before, and even though we didn’t find anything, it’s still too dangerous.”
“This place is actually very safe,” Miss Luo said calmly. “The person has already left and did not leave anything behind.”
For some reason, Xi Mo felt much more at ease hearing that. Her fear of the room had mostly been psychological, but after Miss Luo said it was safe, she didn’t feel as tense anymore. “If that’s the case, then Yesheng and I will stay here,” she said.
Ruan Yesheng also relaxed and nodded. “Sleeping on the bed is better than squeezing on the couch.”
Miss Luo seemed to respect their decision. Seeing that they chose to stay, she didn’t insist on changing rooms. She only said, “I live next door. If anything happens, I’ll hear it. You two can sleep without worry.”
This sentence sounded like a guarantee given by Miss Luo to calm their emotions.
“Thank you,” Ruan Yesheng said sincerely.
She recalled Gu Cen’s words, saying that she had never seen anyone as beautiful as Miss Luo. That was only Gu Cen’s first impression of Miss Luo’s looks. Now that Ruan Yesheng had met Miss Luo herself, she realized she truly had never met anyone like her before. She looked distant, as if separated by a thin veil, yet there was a faint, special gentleness in her, especially the kind she showed toward strangers.
Shen Qingbie, Xi Mo, and Ruan Yesheng, none of them had any connection to Miss Luo before today. They were all just strangers who met by chance.
But Miss Luo was also very cautious. Until now, she hadn’t revealed a single detail about herself, not even her name. The gentleness she kept hidden carried a trace of guardedness. She wouldn’t let others get too close. Ruan Yesheng could sense it, so she didn’t ask further.
“Miss Luo, we’ve really taken up too much of your time,” Ruan Yesheng said. “You should go rest. Good night.”
Miss Luo nodded slightly, turned around, and left.
Ruan Yesheng followed her to the door and watched as Miss Luo opened her own room, stepped inside, and gently closed the door behind her.
Only then did Ruan Yesheng close her own door, smiling as she looked at Xi Mo. “Are you scared to sleep here?”
“…I’m fine,” Xi Mo said, looking at the smile on Ruan Yesheng’s face. “What about you?”
“I’m fine too.” Ruan Yesheng sat by the bed. “Miss Luo said it’s safe here. I believe her. She looks strong. Did you see how she checked the door lock? She was very professional. Her nose is sharp too, she can smell things we can’t.”
Xi Mo nodded and handed her clean pajamas. Ruan Yesheng had been outside all night, so she washed up in the bathroom.
After washing, the two lay under the blanket.
They had been tired for a long time, and now that they finally sank into the soft, warm bed, Ruan Yesheng’s body relaxed like she was lying on a cloud. Sleepiness came over her. She turned to the side and murmured in Xi Mo’s ear, “Xi Mo, can I hold you?”
Last night, she wanted Xi Mo to hold her and lied that she was cold. But Xi Mo, being the Universe’s straight girl, just covered her tightly with the blanket instead. Her plan failed.
Since that way didn’t work, she would try another. She didn’t believe that of all roads leading to Rome, none led to a straight woman.
Xi Mo’s body tensed slightly. She didn’t answer.
Ruan Yesheng leaned closer but didn’t hug her yet. “I’m a bit scared,” she said.
Xi Mo sighed helplessly. “Didn’t you just say you weren’t scared?”
“I’m scared now,” Ruan Yesheng’s voice turned soft and charming. “Maybe because the light’s off, it’s all dark.”
“…Then hold me,” Xi Mo said after a moment.
After getting permission, Ruan Yesheng finally felt at ease. She reached over Xi Mo’s body and hugged her. She leaned in close, so close that Xi Mo could feel Ruan Yesheng’s hair brushing against the skin of her neck, tickling softly. Ruan Yesheng’s arms were warm as they wrapped around her, and she even placed one leg over Xi Mo’s.
“What do you think that sticky stuff on the lock was?” Ruan Yesheng lowered her voice. “Just thinking about it is scary.”
Though she said it was scary, to show her fear she tightened her arms around Xi Mo even more, that leg almost wrapping around her completely.
Xi Mo: “…”
“I don't know.” Xi Mo could only let her cling to her like that. “Cui Jiayu will come by tomorrow afternoon. We’ll give it to her then.”
“Okay.” Ruan Yesheng smiled in the dark.
Xi Mo asked stiffly, “What dish do you want for lunch tomorrow? You said you’d tell me tonight so Auntie Ranla can prepare the ingredients.”
“I want to eat…” Ruan Yesheng’s breath brushed against Xi Mo’s ear, warm and scented.
Xi Mo shivered all over. That voice in her ear felt like fire, crackling and snapping like an electric current.
Ruan Yesheng smiled as she said the dishes she wanted. Xi Mo silently remembered them, though her ear still felt like it was burning.
After what happened last night, with all the twists and turns, both of them were tired in body and mind. After chatting for a while, they soon fell asleep.
Before dawn the next day, Ruan Yesheng’s phone alarm went off again. She had no choice but to reluctantly let go of Xi Mo and get up to dress.
Xi Mo got up with her as usual and saw her off downstairs. This time, Xi Mo was still worried and called Baolai along. They escorted Ruan Yesheng all the way to the house where the show was being filmed. Only after watching her walk inside from under the tree did Xi Mo and Baolai turn back.
The morning part was just wrapping up the variety show recording. There were no challenge missions like yesterday, just daily interactions among the guests, eating, drinking, chatting, in a relaxed atmosphere.
The recording went smoothly and time passed quickly. They filmed the scene of Gu Cen and Li Siran leaving. Since both of them had other schedules, they had to leave in the morning. Ruan Yesheng, Shen Qingbie, and Zhang Zhiyin went to see them off to the car.
Though the recording time was short, spending so much time together, especially in a teamwork, clue-hunting format, made it easy to deepen bonds. Gu Cen even took the initiative to ask for their private contacts, saying, “I’m leaving now. When you come to Beijing, remember to visit me.”
After finishing the show, Ruan Yesheng also had to go to Beijing for the script reading of the new two-female-lead movie. She smiled and said, “Okay.”
After Gu Cen and Li Siran got in the car, the cameras stopped rolling. It was now a private space. Gu Cen, who never really watched her words, became even more casual. She sent over the three contacts she had gotten and said, “Why don’t you add Sister Ruanruan, Sister Qingqing, and Sister Zhiyin too?”
Li Siran actually wanted to, but she wasn’t as thick-skinned as Gu Cen. They might be in a girl group and have some popularity, but they hadn’t gotten any truly good resources yet. Especially since girl groups usually had short shelf lives. Li Siran wanted to switch to acting, and getting connected with people like Ruan Yesheng and Shen Qingbie would help her, but she just couldn’t bring herself to say it.
“Just add them.” Gu Cen urged her. “What’s the big deal? You really need to fix this habit of not adding people. If you don’t have connections, you have nothing. How are you gonna survive in this industry then?”
Li Siran seemed pricked by her words, her face turning cold. “Yeah, I don’t have connections. So what? You think everyone is like you, walking on roads paved with gold connections, picking and choosing like you do?”
“What’s wrong with you? I didn’t mean it that way.” Gu Cen looked confused. She had always been laid-back and didn’t get how fragile Li Siran’s pride could be. “I just wanted you to have more people you can talk to. Didn’t you say you wanted to act? Sister Ruanruan and Qingqing are both actors. Maybe they can help you get some roles later.”
Li Siran stayed silent.
“I can actually get you a shot at a really good project. It’s not a hundred percent for sure, but if you perform well, your chances will be much higher than others.” Gu Cen noticed she was upset and tried to please her. “Do you want t9 give it a try? It’s a big movie.”
Li Siran glanced at Gu Cen.
She was a little tempted.
Gu Cen saw Li Siran react and got happy, but she still had a broken mouth. “Then I’ll send you the assistant director’s contact information. That movie has two female leads. With your lousy experience, don’t even think about it. Your acting can’t hold it up. You can only play a supporting role and show your face a bit. If the box office blows up, you can still brag that you were part of it and say how much box office you had.”
Li Siran: “…”
Thanks a lot.
“The two female leads were already set long ago. I’m not sure who they picked in the end, their secrecy is too good,” Gu Cen said. “But there’re two female supporting roles still open. You can go find that assistant director I just sent you and audition.”
After a while, Li Siran said, “…Thank you.”
“Why are you suddenly being so polite?” Gu Cen put her arm around her shoulder and grinned.
Li Siran looked at Gu Cen but said nothing. Later, she added the assistant director, then added Ruan Yesheng, Shen Qingbie, and Zhang Zhiyin too.
Ruan Yesheng got Li Siran’s friend request. She clicked accept. Li Siran politely greeted her and didn’t bother her again.
Ruan Yesheng officially finished filming. Ning Kui and Zhang Zhiyin invited her and Shen Qingbie to eat together, but both of them declined. Shen Qingbie had to take care of Yu An, and Ruan Yesheng agreed to eat with Xi Mo at A’cuo Rize’s house.
When Ruan Yesheng arrived at A’cuo Rize’s place, it wasn’t lunchtime yet. Ranla Changxiu warmly treated her with snacks. Xi Mo and Ruan Yesheng had nothing much to do, so they sat in the yard chatting. Baolai lay in the yard by himself, looking very good and quiet.
“I’ll show you something.” Ruan Yesheng took out the mini crossbow she bought at that tool shop and handed it to Xi Mo. “Do you know how to use this?”
Xi Mo picked it up and looked, but didn’t get it. She’s not good with handwork, especially weapons.
Ruan Yesheng took out a small pouch, shook it, and opened it. Inside were a bag of small crossbow beads. The mini crossbow is palm-sized. It doesn’t use crossbow bolts, it looks like it uses these beads.
“I can’t find where to put the beads.” Ruan Yesheng pointed at three small holes on the side and said, “But this looks like the place the beads come out.”
“Why are you suddenly thinking about this?” Xi Mo asked.
“I want to carry it for self-defense.” Ruan Yesheng said, “I always feel things aren’t safe. You have to carry something. This is very small, people won’t know what it is at first glance, and security checks won’t catch it. Oh, I also bought you one, as a gift?”
“What kind of gift is that?” Xi Mo frowned.
This isn't the gift she wanted.
She wants… a sweater.
It had to be hand-knitted by Ruan Yesheng, but Xi Mo felt Ruan Yesheng didn’t get it at all.
“But I just don’t know how to work it.” Ruan Yesheng was still fiddling with the mini crossbow, mumbling, “Looks like I’ll have to ask the shop owner.”
Xi Mo got a bit unhappy again and stared at her.
Ruan Yesheng didn’t pay much attention. She kept studying the mini crossbow. Her mind worked fast, and after a while, she really figured it out. She found a part that could be opened. Inside were three tunnels that matched the three holes on the other side. Ruan Yesheng peeked inside and thought this must be where the beads go, so she put a few beads into each tunnel.
“I know how to use it now.” Ruan Yesheng got excited and looked at Xi Mo with a smile. “I’ll test how strong it is.”
She sat down on the chair, aimed the mini crossbow at a tree, and pressed the trigger.
There was a whoosh, and three beads shot out at once, but they didn’t even touch the tree and fell straight to the ground.
Ruan Yesheng: “…”
Xi Mo gave a faint smile and said, “That’s useless. You can’t even hit anything.”
“You’re the one who can’t hit anything.” Ruan Yesheng glared at her playfully and ran to pick up the beads on the ground.
Baolai in the yard jumped up and quickly ran to the gate. Ruan Yesheng and Xi Mo followed its gaze and saw a woman walking into the yard.
It was Miss Luo.
Baolai wagged his tail around Miss Luo. Miss Luo bent down and patted his head, and only then did he happily go play.
“Miss Luo.” Ruan Yesheng stood up to greet her, and Xi Mo also stood up.
They had heard from Ranla Changxiu that Miss Luo went out this morning for some business and would have lunch with them today.
Miss Luo nodded at them. Her eyes fell on the mini crossbow in Ruan Yesheng’s hand. She didn’t say anything and went to the well to draw water and wash her hands. Every move she made was full of grace.
Ruan Yesheng kept practicing with her mini crossbow, but she couldn’t hit anything each time. Yet she was stubborn and refused to give up, so she kept shooting.
Xi Mo sat beside her and watched her pick up the beads over and over again. She told Ruan Yesheng to just stay and play, then went to help her pick them up.
“It still doesn’t work.” Ruan Yesheng leaned naturally against Xi Mo and said with some doubt, “Am I doing it wrong?”
“I don’t know about these things.” Xi Mo smelled the light scent from Ruan Yesheng, maybe she had put on some perfume today. It smelled nice.
Ruan Yesheng stood up again and aimed at the tree.
Miss Luo watched her fiddle with it for a long time without success. In the end, she walked over slowly and said, “May I take a look?”
Ruan Yesheng felt thankful for Miss Luo’s help last night and smiled as she handed the mini crossbow to her. “Of course. Be careful not to hurt yourself.”
Miss Luo lowered her head to look at the mini crossbow. She stood in front of Ruan Yesheng and raised her arm. Her arm hung steady in the air. The mini crossbow didn’t even move in her hand. There was no wind at all, yet it felt like a cold wind rested on her.
Miss Luo pressed the trigger.
Three crossbow beads shot out with force and hit the tree right on target.
Ruan Yesheng was stunned. After a moment, she ran over to look. The beads had made a dent on the tree. So the mini crossbow was actually that powerful.
When Ruan Yesheng came back, Miss Luo gave the mini crossbow back to her without saying a word. Ruan Yesheng understood that Miss Luo was showing her how to use it. Miss Luo’s moves were slow, as if breaking each step down for her.
“Miss Luo, can you teach me again?” Ruan Yesheng asked with a smile.
Miss Luo nodded.
Ruan Yesheng lifted the crossbow again. Miss Luo adjusted her arm position and said, “When you aim, your arm must stay steady. The crossbow bead has weight, and it will drop in the air. So when you aim, you must think of that, and aim a bit higher before shooting.”
Ruan Yesheng tried what Miss Luo said, and it was indeed a bit better than before. But it was still far from being able to use the mini crossbow properly.
“Just practice more,” Miss Luo said calmly. She walked to the side and stayed quiet.
Ruan Yesheng wasn’t satisfied with practicing alone, so she pulled Xi Mo over. “I’m giving this to you. It can protect you at a key moment. You have to learn it well, or else giving it to you is pointless.”
Xi Mo looked helpless but still went along with her.
She really wasn’t good at it. After several tries, she did even worse than Ruan Yesheng had. Ruan Yesheng laughed out loud and copied Xi Mo’s tone, saying, “You can’t even hit the target.”
Xi Mo: “…”
Later, while Xi Mo kept practicing, Ruan Yesheng repeated what she just learned from Miss Luo, smiling brightly. “Keep your arm steady, don’t shake. The beads have weight, and they drop when flying, so you have to consider that in advance…”
Xi Mo: “…”
…Only you can do it.
While the two were practicing with the small crossbow, Miss Luo sat down.
After a while, her phone rang. She took it out, glanced at the screen, and her brows curved a little. At that moment, the cold distance on her face melted away like snow and ice, a soft smile blooming on her lips, as if she had just seen the happiest thing in the world.
Ruan Yesheng turned to look at her, a bit surprised.
So Miss Luo could smile too.
“Qingyi.” Miss Luo answered the call and softly called the name on the other end.
