Entering the hotel room with Jae-yeon, Jae-hee was momentarily at a loss for words. What is all this? She had thought there would be maybe a couple of suitcases at most, but the sight of boxes stacked in layers left her speechless. Is all this even going to fit in my car?

“Why do you have so much stuff?”

“Hehe.”

“You should’ve sent it after finding a place. How did you bring all this here?”

“I shipped it.”

“Huh?”

“I shipped it ahead of time before leaving the country. The hotel sent it straight to this room, and I paid extra for the accommodation because of that.”

What is this now…? Seeing Jae-yeon being so reckless again, Jae-hee let out a hollow laugh. She still felt like the same wild younger sister. Thinking back to how Jae-yeon had warmly greeted the doorman at the hotel entrance, it did not seem impossible that she had arranged for her luggage to arrive ahead of her. She had said she came to find Jae-hee right after arriving in Korea, but somehow, in that short time, she had already gotten close to the staff.

Jae-yeon began folding the messy clothes scattered all over. Jae-hee put down her phone and wallet and sat on the edge of the bed.

“But is she really okay? My eolke.”

“Mm. If Yoo-jin doesn’t like something, it shows.”

“…Really?”

“Mm, so you really don't need to worry at all.”

"...I really wanna know how you two met~"

Drawing out her words, Jaeyeon asked. Jae-hee smiled brightly at the sight. She brushed her hair back, leaned back, and rested against the soft bed.

"I'm more curious about your love life, you know? I won't tell you until you talk first."

"Then I guess I should say it right away."

"...?"

"I'm forever alone."

*said in English

Seeing Jae-yeon proudly say with fluent pronunciation that she was forever single, Jae-hee sat up again. Forever single? Does that make sense? Not just because she was her sister, but objectively, Jae-yeon was very beautiful, witty, and enjoyed being with people. And yet, she said she never had a single relationship? Especially now, almost nine years since she separated from them? Jae-hee answered with a shocked look.

"Lies."

"It's true."

Jaeyeon calmly folded her clothes and pressed them down into the suitcase.

"Do you remember what Unnie told me?"

"...What?"

"To meet a destined love."

"...?"

"I think you don't remember... You said it. You told me to meet a destined love. Not a one-night flame kind of love, but a person I can be with for life. But no matter how long I wait, that person doesn't come."

"...So?"

"Now I have to find them."

"...?"

"I came to Korea not just to find Unnie but also to find my love."

"???"

I guess my little sister's gotten really weird while we were apart, Jae-hee thought, looking at Jae-yeon with a dumbfounded face. Seeing Jae-yeon stand with her hands on her waist and a proud look on her face, she seemed just the same as before. She’d taken a childish piece of advice that Jae-hee didn’t even remember giving, and followed it seriously. For 24 years, she hadn’t dated even once. Jae-hee didn’t know if she should feel proud or call her a fool. Still, she thought being careful was better than dating just anyone, so she nodded.

"...I’ll tell you at the restaurant."

"Yes!"

With a smile like her sister’s, Jae-yeon looked at Jae-hee carefully. Since they met, they’d only talked lightly about what they’d been up to, and hadn’t shared anything deeper. She had so much she wanted to say, it felt like it was stuck at the tip of her throat. Jae-yeon pretended to fold clothes and carefully brought up one of the heavy things.

"...Hey, Unnie."

"Yeah?"

"Don’t you miss Mom and Dad?"

"...I do miss them."

Hearing the gentle tone, Jae-yeon looked at Jae-hee reflected in the mirror. She looked calm, but not completely at ease.

"...Unnie, I looked for you a lot."

"I’m sure you did."

"I found you... but in the end, I couldn’t go to see you."

"...Why?"

"...Because I found out how you felt. Dad, Mom, and me too. We all found out... so."

Thinking about their parents, Jae-yeon dropped the blouse she was holding without strength. Even though she had found her, she couldn’t go to her because of the letter Jae-hee had left behind. She couldn’t even read it all at once because of the pain in each sentence, showing how sorrowful her heart was when she wrote it. That was why she couldn’t come to Korea. She knew Jae-hee had gone to grad school in America. She even knew where. But she couldn’t go to her. Because of Jae-hee’s earnest request not to be found, there was no way their parents could push past it.

"...I see."

Her dry voice was calm. Jae-yeon glanced at Jae-hee again, feeling like she might cry. She looked like she would cry but didn’t shed a single tear. Thinking about how many tears she must’ve cried until now just so she wouldn’t cry when facing anything about their family... It was easy to guess. The one who had it the hardest after leaving was her.

"...I won’t tell Mom and Dad."

"You don’t have to."

"No, I will do it that way. When you... want to, you can contact them."

Jae-hee, who had been sitting silently on the edge of the bed, stood up and walked over to Jae-yeon. She messed up Jae-yeon’s hair, whose eyes were now filled with tears.

“You’ve grown up, Seon Jae-yeon.”

Now she could understand other people’s hearts too. Over the young Jae-yeon from the past, the image of a mature Jae-yeon slowly appeared. Just like Jae-hee, who had left home and grown up, Jae-yeon didn’t stay still either—she had grown too. Feeling proud, Jae-hee stroked Jae-yeon’s cheek once and lifted the suitcase. Then she carefully asked something she had really been curious about.

“...I have something I’m wondering about.”

“Yeah?”

Jae-yeon quickly wiped her tears and looked up at Jae-hee. Looking a bit shy, Jae-hee avoided her gaze and asked,

“Do they know I got married?”

“Yeah, they know.”

Of course, there’s no way they wouldn’t. It’s not like Korea has no connection with the US. Especially since both of them are Korean American, they often talked about Korean news. So there was no way they wouldn’t know. A same-sex marriage scandal in a conservative country like Korea would be one of the more interesting gossip topics. And with Yoo-jin’s background, they probably knew even better. Noticing what Jae-hee really meant, Jae-yeon spoke.

“You’re wondering how they reacted, right?”

“It’d be a lie if I said I’m not curious.”

“For later... I’ll keep it a secret.”

“Can’t you tell me now?”

“Nope, I can’t!”

Jae-yeon answered firmly, her face showing the same playful look as Jae-hee’s. More than feeling annoyed, Jae-hee found her cute and wrapped her arm around Jae-yeon’s neck in a headlock with a playful smile.

“This little thing grew up and turned into a sly snake, really~”

“Ah— ah! Unnie—! I surrender!!”

Howon Card VVIP Approval

Ha*jin 15,000 won* (One-time payment)

12/1 15:10 Singsing Produce

Total accumulated: 60,790,000 won**

*≈11 usd  **≈45000 usd

“What in the world did you buy?”

Yoo-jin tilted her head and stared hard at the word “produce.” Was that the place that sells fruits and vegetables? She recalled the large produce company that was said to be newly entering the food section in the basement of Howon Department Store’s main branch. She became curious about what exactly Jae-hee had bought for fifteen thousand won.

The card Yoo-jin had given Jae-hee was no ordinary one. It was a premium product released by Howon Capital, a subsidiary of the Howon Group, specifically targeting the very top tier of society. It was not a card one could get just by being rich—only the top 0.01% in the country received invitations to apply for it.

The requirements for issuance were extremely strict. It was not just about money—they thoroughly examined reputation, social standing, and capability, making it out of reach even for people with considerable wealth. As a result, cardholders were an extremely small group, even when including the business, political, and entertainment worlds. To set itself apart, the card was not made of common plastic but of titanium, adding a touch of luxury. Unlike mass-produced plastic cards, these were crafted by metal artisans who worked on them all day. Producing even five in a day was considered a lot. Despite being just a credit card, the production cost easily ran into the millions of won.

The credit limit started in the hundreds of millions by default. In Yoo-jin’s case, as a verified member of a chaebol family, there was no limit. It was also a card she had never swiped for anything under a million won. This card, created perfectly for spending money like water, was used for the first time on the lowest amount possible. And it was used at a fruit shop—for just fifteen thousand won. While Yoo-jin was uselessly imagining what that fifteen thousand won could have bought, her phone rang at just the right moment.

“Hello?”

“Hello, CEO Ha Yoo-jin. This is Executive Director Yoo Sang-wook from Howon Capital. May I speak with you for a moment?”

It was the polite inquiry of a middle-aged man with a deep voice. But behind the politeness, a strong sense of embarrassment could be felt. His awkward tone was thick with confusion.

“Yes, that’s fine. What is it?”

“Well, it seems the black card issued by our company under your name may have been lost, so we reached out, out of concern.”

“…Lost?”

There was an odd word stuck inside that overly polite sentence. Lost?

“Yes, there was a suspicious transaction just now.”

“Ah… that… it’s not lost.”

“Pardon?”

“It’s not lost, so you don’t need to worry.”

“Ah, I… I see. Understood.”

Well, even if it was me, I would call if I saw someone using a black card with no limit at a small fruit store in the neighborhood. Anyone would think it was stolen.

“There might be small payments coming through, so don’t worry about it.”

“Yes, I understand. Sorry for the trouble.”

“No problem. Take care then.”

She understood the executive director’s awkwardness. Unlike a normal customer service team where the highest rank is team leader, the VVIP customer service team is run by an executive director who is right under the CEO. That shows the ‘class’ of the card. It was natural to think that someone from the group owner’s family wouldn’t spend just fifteen thousand won on a card. Especially when the store name was ‘Singsing Produce.’ Anyone would find it suspicious.

Yoo-jin thought about calling but stopped. She did not want to worry herself. But the payment notifications kept making her want to call.

She meant for Jae-hee to buy something expensive for her younger sister, whom she hasn't seen in a long time, but what on earth is she buying? The more she looked at the payment notifications, the more it felt like things were straying further and further from what she had intended. It seemed like Jae-hee would explain all about these suspicious yet cute payment records in detail once she got home. Thinking of how Jae-hee would always go on and on about her own stories, Yoo-jin began to make cheerful guesses about what exactly the two of them were up to.

“I’m back.”

“Oh, you’re back?”

“Eolke, you’re back?”

Jae-hee, looking extremely tired, greeted Yoo-jin. It seemed Jae-yeon had changed into housewear—she was wearing a white short-sleeved T-shirt and leggings, holding a basket of tangerines in one hand—and she too welcomed Yoo-jin. Yoo-jin was briefly at a loss for words at Jae-yeon’s outfit, but she smiled naturally and returned the greeting. Jae-hee pointed upstairs and said to Jae-yeon,

“Go up and get some rest.”

“Okay~”

After watching Jae-yeon head to the guest room—having gone to the kitchen, grabbed a handful more tangerines from the box on the dining table, and added them to her basket—Jae-hee pulled Yoo-jin into the master bedroom.

“Sorry, but I think we have to sleep together just until Jae-yeon leaves.”

“I don’t mind.”

“Oh… really?”

“Where did that person go, the one who got drunk a few days ago and whined about wanting to sleep together?”

“T-That was…”

Yoo-jin casually brushed past Jae-hee, whose face turned red. As Jae-hee fidgeted and tried to explain, Yoo-jin cut in and asked first,

“Where on earth did you go today?”

“T-Today?”

"I gave my card and told you to buy something nice..."

At that, Jae-hee jumped in like she'd been waiting for it.

"Everything was what Jae-yeon wanted to do."

"I don't believe that."

"It's true. After you left... I helped her check out of the hotel and asked if there was anything she wanted to do. I told her her sister-in-law gave her a card. First, she said she wanted to see a beach in Korea, so we went to the closest one. On the way, we passed a fruit shop, and she begged me to stop, so we bought a whole box of tangerines... After getting some sea breeze at the beach, we were gonna have dinner, and then Jae-yeon suddenly said she wanted carpaccio*. So I started looking for a restaurant, but then she suddenly dragged me into a place saying she found something similar—a yukhoe bibimbap spot."

*Italian dish, thinly sliced/pounded raw meat or fish seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

"How are carpaccio and yukhoe bibimbap even remotely the same?"

“That’s what I’m saying! She finished one bowl just like that, then she said she wanted to try the Korean convenience store experience. She got all excited and started buying everything, then suddenly she said she had to buy an album. Something like Girl Velvet, what was it again, she’s a fan… a fan meeting or something? She said she has to buy a lot to get in. So she bought tens of the same album. Why?! Then she said she wanted to eat something spicy… I almost died eating it. My tongue still feels like it’s burning. I could hardly eat it at all, but she ate all that spicy food by herself. Then suddenly she said she wanted to go to Daiso. She bought a bunch of stuff like board games there… whew.”

The day’s trouble was all behind Jae-hee now. She wasn’t talking in her usual calm and gentle way, but was whining instead. It felt strange. Her shoulders were slumped like someone who had played with an energetic grade schooler all day. She said she didn’t know how much her little sister had changed in nine years, like she was complaining about her life, but it also sounded fun. Not sure if she was tired or excited.

“Did you have fun?”

“Uh? …Yeah, it was fun.”

“Then that’s enough. As long as you and Agassi had fun, that’s what matters.”

When she saw how calm Yoo-jin looked, Jae-hee suddenly felt shy about all the whining she’d just done. Feeling awkward, she touched the side of her neck and looked away. Then Yoo-jin lightly walked past her and started unbuttoning the blouse she was wearing.

“What did you two talk about? It felt like one day wouldn’t have been enough.”

At Yoo-jin’s gentle voice, Jae-hee looked at her again, then quickly turned her head away. Yoo-jin had already taken off her thin sleeveless shirt, and now she was only in her underwear. It was fancy lingerie that tickled the heart in a strange way. They were married, and after living together for five years, doing the laundry of each other’s underwear wasn’t a big deal. But whenever Jae-hee saw Yoo-jin wearing that kind of lingerie, she got flustered and couldn’t speak properly.

Yoo-jin laughed quietly as she looked at Jae-hee’s red ears. Jae-hee always liked it more when there was still something left to take off, rather than a fully naked body. Or maybe it wasn’t about taking off clothes but tearing them off? Even though they were married and had watched each other for a long time, Jae-hee was still easily embarrassed.

“S-So… I mean, we talked about how she’s been doing. Like what college she went to, if she met someone nice, if she had friends… stuff like that. I also talked about myself. How I met you, how I’ve been living…”

Not even a full minute after she realized she was rambling, Jae-hee was already telling all kinds of cute little stories again. Yoo-jin listened quietly and enjoyed the peaceful moment. Jae-hee, happily telling her wife all about her day, and Yoo-jin, calmly listening to every word—both had the same soft smile on their lips without even realizing it.

"Joker Draw?"

*or Catch the Thief, Korean version of Old Maid

"Yes! Eolke! Let's do joker draw. Yes?!"

Jae-yeon shook the playing cards she probably bought at Daiso and said to Yoo-jin.

Jae-hee, feeling flustered, stepped between the two. She poked Jae-yeon's side hard and said,

"This person is tired after work, so play with me. Okay?"

"Ehh, how can two people do joker draw? Super No Fun!"

*개노잼" (gae no-jaem) (ge no jam) - Korean slang, means "fucking boring/not fun" 개 = freaking/fucking (as emphasis, just like f word)

ë…¸ = no (meaning 'not)

잼 = 재미 (fun)

"Whom did you learn ‘Super No Fun’ from?!"

"Okay, let's do it."

"Yay!"

Jae-hee, startled by Yoo-jin’s sudden consent, glanced back and forth between Jae-yeon and Yoo-jin. The contrast between Jae-yeon’s excited expression and Yoo-jin’s calm demeanor felt strange. Jae-yeon, an unexpected variable in their otherwise predictable routine, unknowingly went to the living room to set up the game. Watching her, Yoo-jin picked up a few tangerines and slowly followed behind.

Yoo-jin was never the type to go along with things like this. Why is she acting like this? Also, just a few days ago, our relationship has been tricky. Is she worried because of Jae-yeon? Jae-hee felt very uncomfortable and followed behind Yoo-jin. Then she went to the table and played with the wooden geese. In the big house, everyone sitting close in the living room looked very peaceful. Yoo-jin quietly sat next to Jae-hee and watched Jae-yeon shuffle the cards. Then she started peeling the tangerines she brought.

“Ah.”

“Ah?”

Yoo-jin pushed a fairly big piece of tangerine into Jae-hee’s open mouth without warning. They had eaten tangerines happily on the way home with Jae-yeon, so Jae-hee already knew the taste, but it felt different when Yoo-jin fed her. For Jae-hee, who ate tangerines for the first time in her life today, she smiled lightly at the sweet taste. For Jae-hee and Jae-yeon, who had only eaten American oranges all their lives, it was a whole new world of taste.

The tangerine Ha Yoo-jin fed tasted somehow more special. It was not like extra seasoning was added, but why was it so sweet? It was sweet like sugar was sprinkled on it. Jae-hee, who liked sweet things like a little kid, quickly forgot her uneasy feelings and smiled softly while enjoying the tangerine.

“Just playing is boring. Do you want to make a bet?”

“Jae-yeon, let’s just play. What bet?”

“What do you want? Agassi?”

Again, Jae-hee’s opinion was lightly ignored. Is she just acting like at the housewarming, or did she really like it? Jae-hee could not tell at all. The variable named Seon Jae-yeon was too big. Yoo-jin’s change was so sudden and big that even sharp Jae-hee could not keep up.

“Then, Agassi, how about a simple wish?”

“A wish sounds good, Unnie! I want a wish!”

“Then, among the three of us, the first-place winner tells two people their wish. Sound good?”

“Then the first to win three times is the winner.”

A wish? Jae-hee admired Jae-yeon’s skillful card moves like a pro gambler and grabbed the cards in front of her. It was a bet about wishes said in a light and playful way, but still, she wanted it. With a look like she would bet her life, Jae-hee held her cards. The game started.

"No way! These cheaters!"

"Pfft, Unnie, you still cannot play games."

"Seriously, you are so bad."

Jae-hee, who lost last place six times in a row, jumped around in frustration, but no one listened. Yoo-jin and Jae-yeon each won some rounds, but Yoo-jin barely won overall. Jae-yeon looked at Yoo-jin with surprise. Having played many card games in the US where gambling is legal, Jae-yeon thought she was one of the top amateurs, but she did not expect to lose to Yoo-jin. Of course, this was just a Joker draw game, not professional card games like poker or blackjack, but still.

"Unnie*, you really play well. Your poker face is no joke."

*addressing Yoo-jin

"Really? Because I have a crazy gambler friend around me."

Yoo-jin said this while gathering the cards. Only then did Jae-hee remember Soo-hyun and rolled on the floor struggling, but no one cared.

"Unnie, how about a different game tomorrow?"

"I will prepare the game for tomorrow."

"Oh, really?"

"You can look forward to it. Thanks to you, I had a great time."

Yoo-jin's face was bright as if she really enjoyed playing. Lying down and watching her, Jae-hee felt even more confused. Like someone who discovered something unknown, Jae-hee stared at Yoo-jin. Feeling Jae-hee’s gaze, Yoo-jin did not look at her but tickled Jae-hee's waist with her fingers. Jae-hee burst out laughing, turned around, and stood up.

"Then, what about the wish?"

"…Mm, I’ll keep Jae-hee’s wish for later. And as for you, Agassi… I’ll think about it a bit more."

"Okay! Got it! Tell me the moment you think of it!"

"Let’s go in and sleep now. It’s already twelve. Jae-yeon, you need to start looking at rooms tomorrow."

"Yeah, yeah."

While Jae-hee went to wash up, Yoo-jin watched from the second floor as Jae-yeon came to get some tangerines, hugging the precious empty basket in her arms. Yoo-jin folded her arms and leaned against the doorframe.

"…Agassi."

"Yes, Unnie."

"I thought of a wish."

"Oh, really? What is it?"

Yoo-jin looked hesitant, like she wasn’t sure if she should say it. Seeing that, Jae-yeon gave her a friendly smile and spoke first.

"Unnie, just say it."

"…My in-laws… I mean, Jae-hee’s and your parents. Do they know we’re married? And if they do, how did they react? That’s my wish—to hear that."

"…Wow."

"…?"

"I was just talking about that with Jae-hee unnie earlier today. How can a married couple be this in sync?"

"…Really?"

"I never told Unnie about it because it was supposed to be a secret…"

"Then I’ll keep it a secret from Jae-hee."

"We made a bet to be the winner’s genie, so I’ll tell you."

Yoo-jin briefly recalled the meeting between Jae-hee and her father. That cold, stiff atmosphere. Her father’s icy stare when Yoo-jin had taken the lead and released the article to the public. In that heavy moment, anyone else would have frozen on the spot, but Jae-hee, with her friendly smile, had tried so hard to lighten the mood.

It probably had not been much different. They must have gotten angry. Yoo-jin assumed so and looked at Jae-yeon. Clearing her throat with a soft hum, Jae-yeon suddenly wore a warm expression, as if acting out a scene, and spoke gently.

"Our Jae-hee."

"…"

"I’m glad she found someone she loves."

"…"

"She really is our daughter."

"…"

"I wonder what kind of person Yoo-jin is. I’d like to see her in person."

"…"

"Since she’s the one our daughter chose, I’m sure she’s wonderful and kind. I want to meet her soon and say congratulations on their marriage."

"…"

"…Something like that?"

Maybe it ran in the Seon family—this cheeky cuteness. Yoo-jin looked unsure how to react to a response so far from what she had expected. Jae-yeon nodded as if she understood.

"You might not believe it, but they really were like that. Of course, in the US, same-sex marriage has been legal for a while, so people’s views have changed a lot… But our parents have supported legalization from the start."

"…I see."

"We still have to wait for Jae-hee’s heart to settle, but when the time comes, if you meet them, they’ll treat you with care. They’re not the kind of people who’d get mad just because you got married without telling them. So don’t worry."

"..."

She was at a loss for words. The phrase 'getting angry for getting married without telling them' sounded like it was referring to her father. But as Yoo-jin slowly regained her pace, she cautiously added a question.

"...What do you think of me, Jae-yeon?"

"My eolke?"

"Do you think I suit Jae-hee?"

Jae-yeon rolled her eyes thoughtfully. Then she gave her honest opinion.

"I can’t say for sure just from today, this short moment, but..."

With nervous anticipation, Yoo-jin fixed her eyes on Jae-yeon's lips and listened closely.

"...You are pretty, kind, rich, and you knew how to treat your wife's younger sister warmly the first time meeting her, so I like you."

"...Am I warm?"

"Yes. Don't you know? I heard Korean chaebols are usually very closed off. It’s probably to be expected. But even so, you opened up the most personal space—your home—and welcomed me. Judging from Jae-hee unnie's reaction, you don't seem like someone who normally enjoys games like this, but you still played along."

"...I do like games."

Yoo-jin let out a breath, as if she was finally relieved by Jae-yeon’s answer. But then Jae-yeon threw out a sudden remark that caught her off guard.

"I liked your first impression too. Some might call it excessive jealousy, but the moment you found out she was with another woman, you came right over to see her."

"...What?"

"It felt clear how much you love her. I think jealousy is also a part of love. Whether you are a good or bad person to others doesn't matter to me. What matters is that she likes you, and that you like her. And it seems unnie loves you so much that anyone can see it, and you love her just as much. So... I just like you."

"...Thank you, Agassi."

She didn’t know what she was thankful for. Was it because she had been told her first impression was better than she deserved? Or because she was grateful that Jae-hee’s family cared about her? But somehow, she felt like crying. She didn’t deserve to hear such kind words. She was someone who only hurt Jae-hee. Was it really okay for her to hear this? Even if they knew what she had done to Jae-hee, would they still react this way? She was a bad person.

"...Then, Unnie."

"...Yes?"

Pulling her out of those dark thoughts, Jae-yeon scratched the tip of her nose with a shy look.

"What about me?"

"...My first impression of you?"

"Yeah."

The way she twisted her body looked like Jae-hee when she cautiously asked about her first impression on their first date. Remembering how she had answered like she was spellbound that day, Yoo-jin spoke each word carefully.

"You have such amazing beauty next to Jae-hee that it could make someone angry. Thanks to your playful personality, I could approach you comfortably. Staying at Unnie’s house might be uncomfortable, but you did not show it. Your efforts looked pretty and cute, so I like it... Something like that?"

Yoo-jin copied Jae-yeon’s words, making Jae-yeon burst into playful laughter.

"Ah, I really like you."

"I feel the same."

They exchanged pleased looks and smiled happily.
